"For me it has made a huge difference to my identity through cancer. It has meant that I am comfortable going out in public, getting through everyday. I am not stressed about how I look or having to look in the mirror. The difference it has made psychologically is monumental to me."
I found out about the Paxman system in London when I was diagnosed by the breast surgeon who was discussing treatment options with me. I actually thought that it would be colder on my head. I didn’t find it nearly as uncomfortable as people had described to me. I found that while it was somewhat uncomfortable, the benefits of keeping my hair far outweighed the cooling for 3 hours once a week.
Blankets, hot teas and heat packs helped with staying warm during my treatments. Using chemical free shampoo and conditioner and being extremely careful with hair care (ie., using good brushes, sensitive hair ties etc) really helped. I followed all the advice on the Paxman website about washing and caring for my hair which I believe helped.
I can see that my hair has started to grow back and that it continued to grow during treatment as I have lots of 5cm long hairs on the top of my head. It means I will never be bald.
I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone that is going through similar treatments. For me it has made a huge difference to my identity through cancer. It has meant that I am comfortable going out in public, getting through everyday. I am not stressed about how I look or having to look in the mirror. The difference it has made psychologically is monumental to me.
"I would 100% recommend scalp cooling, to enable hair retention and even to aid in the regrowth phase of any hair that is lost. A diagnosis of cancer brings with it a lot of grief and loss and the fact that I didn’t have to loose my hair was a huge win for me. It was a huge part of my identity and still is. I am and forever will be thankful to Paxman for the unbelievable technology they have developed and how it helped me to ensure my quality of life through treatment."
