"I was very happy with scalp cooling. I would recommend scalp cooling to anyone it’s available to. It gave me a sense of control when so much is out of our hands. "
I was first told about scalp cooling by a family friend that had success after scalp cooling in 2019. My oncologist mentioned it during our first appointment.
My first few experiences were not what I expected. I thought the cap would be more painful. I was uncomfortable but that was mostly because I made sure the cap was on very tight.
As I progressed with chemo, I was more comfortable putting the cap on and not worrying about it as much. Every tip I learned was from a family friend and the Paxman Facebook group. So much information on the Facebook group. I used a panty liner in place of the headband. Worked great. I took Tylenol and an Ativan on my way in each morning. I used a silk pillowcase and a wide tooth comb. I followed all of Paxman’s instructions on getting a proper fit, washing hair, products to use etc.

I retained about 80% of my hair. No bald spots. I lost the hair around my ears where the cap didn’t touch and thinned out a bit all over. I purchased a wig but I never needed to use it or even a hat.
My biggest tip is make sure to get a good fit for the cap. Some other advise would be, not to worry about what your hair looks like during chemo or while your still shedding. The less you do to your hair now the happier you will be with it later. I was very happy with scalp cooling. I would recommend scalp cooling to anyone it’s available to. It gave me a sense of control when so much is out of our hands.
"I’m the most thankful for my husband. He was with me every step of the way. He learned how to put the cap on, washed my hair and was with me every step of the way. I’d also like to thanks our children, family, friends, and smilow nurses for being so supportive. Another person I need to thank is a friend Laura S for encouraging me to scalp cool and sharing her experience with it. "
