Meet Marisha, a breast cancer patient who discovered scalp cooling after her oncologist nurse mentioned the process during an appointment. Like many patients who are contemplating scalp cooling, Marisha had some questions about whether it would work for her. However, she says that her scalp cooling journey was exactly as she had expected “and even better”. She did not lose any hair throughout treatment except eyebrows, leaving “the entire hospital in shock and so happy” for her.
Often, when patients are going through chemotherapy treatment, many can feel the need to wear a head covering to maintain their identity. However, due to her hair retention, Marisha didn’t feel the need to do this.
Asked whether she has any scalp cooling haircare tips for other cap users, Marisha says that “she just added pictures of what she used on treatment days”, (on TikTok). She also says that, due to being African American and having dreadlocks, she felt most comfortable using her own products.
When we asked Marisha how she feels about her scalp cooling experience, she says that she feels “so amazing and excited”. Like many patients who choose to scalp cool, Marisha had a strong desire to try and maintain her sense of self while going through treatment. When asked if she would recommend scalp cooling to others, Marisha gave an enthusiastic reply of “absolutely”, saying that she has been spreading the power of scalp cooling on Facebook and TikTok, “going viral” among all her followers.
